Maths trip for Ruapehu College pupil

Mathematics whizz kid. 16-year old Glen Koorey of Waiouru is one of the top 20 finalists of the BNZ Senior Mathematics Competition. This year the competition, established by the Canterbury Mathematical Association, attracted a record 5000 entries of Form six and seven pupils and 200 schools around New Zealand. Glen, a Form 7 pupil at Ruapehu College, sat a preliminary exam paper in July and received confirmation of attaining one of the 20 highest aggregate marks last week. As a result he will be flown to Christchurch on 2 October courtesy of BNZ and Air New Zealand, to sit a 90 minute finals paper which will determine the actual place getters from this year's top 20 finalists. Around 800 students competed in the West North Island region of which the Waimarino is a part. Also included .are New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North and surrounding areas. Glen was one of just two students attaining a placing from the region.

A number of students attained top 100 placings and Certificates of Merit. Apart from the sheer hard work involved in the trip, Glen will have the opportunity of taking part in a guided tour of Christchurch and will be a guest at a luncheon attended by finalists and officials of the Canterbury Mathematics Association.

He will also attend an evening function and prizegiving, where finalists will receive a trophy, book prize and a monetary prize from BNZ, prizes totalling $4600. Glen, who was placed in the top 100 in last year's competition, was delighted with his result. He is enthusiastic about attending

Canterbury Umversity next year, where he will major in Civil Engineering.
