Waiouru club's anniversary
1987 marks the ninth anniversary of the establishment of Waiouru's one and only service club, the Waiouru Lion's Club. Now, almost a decade
down the line, the number of members has dwindled from 38 to just 8, due primarily to the transitory nature of the community Lion's Club secretary Bob Vine said literally hundreds of man hours have been put into various Lions projects which include youth training and development, pre-school facility development and financial assistance, environmental enhancement, development of leisure and recreationai facilities and fund-raising through major local events, such as the Desert Fair. "Our mqst important annual event is the Desert Fair, where we are able to generate the finance to meet the many financial demands," he said. The club's most outstanding achievement this year was the initial fund-raising and subsequent purchase of an incubator for Waiouru Hospital's maternity an-
nexe, according to Mr Vine. Projects still in hand include groundwork and development of play centre facilities, continuing development of Waiouru Kindergarten's sandpit, participation in primary school fund-raising, the continuation of youth development and support for the many local clubs.
