Waimarino health group claim success
The Waimarino Community Health Watch Committee have made a big impact on the area since their establishment just 13 months ago. In that time, the committee has had a major upheaval of its ranks and numbers, losing some members including their
only two male members, while gaining some new faces. Just some of the successful activities organised by the committee over the last year include a survey of elderly of the Waimarino; the establishment of a Standby group in the
community; Well Women's Clinic in Raetihi; promotion of the recent Food Hygiene Course which was very well attended; assistance in finding a doctor for Raetihi and the organisation of a public farewell for former Waimarino Hospital Principal Nurse, Betty
Longcroft. During national AIDS awareness week from 27 September-3 October, an information caravan and displays will be in both Ohakune and Raetihi. Free blood testing, sight and hearing tests will be available to the public as well as information concerning aids and other STD's (sexually transmitted diseases). The committee has a wealth of experience to draw from, with a number of health professionals and individuals with vast local knowledge in its ranks. Chairperson Jenny Dekker and secretary Rosalind Donald are available to be contacted concerning community health queries.
