Tongariro National Park turns 100

Tongariro National Park's centennial celebrations week began yesterday with a mass climb to the crater of Ruapehu. More than 400 people registered at Whakapapa for the climb with another 40 climbers leaving from Turoa. A week of activities are planned to celebrate the passing of the first hundred years of Tongariro National Park, including formal celebrations at the THC Chateau and Park Headquarters on Wednesday About 4,000 people are expected to attend on Wednesday. The North Island Secondary School Championships are being held at Turoa yesterday and today and a fancy dress competition with the theme 'Skiing through the Ages' was to be held at Whakapapa today. Other events include a TNP staff reunion, an open club night, peoples races, disabled skiers slalom, skifield mystery tours, mad Hatters day and a Te Heu Heu Glyserdown".
