The power of advertising

"The power of advertising" was attributed to the iate night car accideflt which occurred just outside Ski FM's office in Mangawhero Terrace recently. Both appliances belonging to the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the accident at 9.30pm, when a car drove into the pavement and ploughed into a low concrete wall outside the building. The wall and a sign belonging to a nearby ski hire business were exten-

sively damaged. Ski FM's National Saies and Marketing Manager Lloyd Solly disclosed to the Bulletin that the driver of the vehicle, who had disappeared by the time Police and the Fire Brigade arrived, was an avid bargain hunter. "That's the power of advertising for you," he said. "You advertise that you're giving away free samples of coffee and milo and people come screaming to your door." The vehicle had to be towed away from the scene of the accident.

A 12-year old flowering cyclamen stole the limelight at this year's Waimarino Spring Show held last week in the Raetihi Primary School Hall. Raetihi resident Barbara Dempsey gained first place in the pot-plant section and a third in the viola category. Mrs Dempsey's impressive sized cyclamen gained special mention from judge, Wanganui Horticultural Society member, Una Hawken. Waimarino Garden Club president Leigh Ryland reported a much improved turnout and greater overall number of entries than in previous years, attributed partly to advance tyDespite this, there were

as usual, few Ohakune entries. The number of entries in the Narcissi (daffodil) section and the overall standard of entries was down because of recent bad weather which adversely affected the blooms, she said. Taking the most prizes in the show was a Raetihi couple, Tom and Locheen Punch. The pair were awarded the Tizard Cup (cut flowers and shrubs), Ashwell Cup (aggregate Narcissi) and the Points Prize Cup. In the children's novelty vegetable section, prizes were awarded to Kelly Thrupp (junior), Gisela Bauer (intermediate) and Rodney McCoubrie (senior). Mrs Ryland made special mention of stewards Fey Eves and Jean Windle who were- involved with receiving entries and processing results on the day. "They really did a marvellous job," she said.
