GARAGE SALE TO HELP LOCAL CANCER PATIENTS
A more diverse range of items on offer at the Lions Den 'Garage Sale' Iast Saturday week would be hard to imagine but it appears that this is what prospective buyers wanted and there was something there for everyone. An assortment of items were being brought in to be sold throughout the morning and among those on display when the Bulletin visited were: a range of toys, ski boots, kitchen equipment, cutlery and crockery, ornaments, books, camp-beds, heaters, records, home-made jams and confectionery, a wash-
ing machine, a child's car seat, a baby's bath, indoor plants, a scrubber polisher and a birds-cage. The 'garage sale' was organised by the wives of Ruapehu Lions as a fund raising event in support of Ozanam House in Palmerston North. All the items sold were donated by members of the public and the proceeds of the sale, together with a $100 raffle, were destined for Ozanam House. A total of $1261.03 was banked on the day but an estimated $250 is yet to come in. Contributions by Ruapehu Lions to the operation of Ozanam House (an accommodation facility for cancer patients undergoing treatment at Palmerston North Hospital and their families in a 'home-like environment) first began in 1972-73.
At that time local Lions collected hay bales from farms in the Waimarino and sold them at auction in Taihape for $1400. This contribution 14 years ago was the first of many to Ozanam House all raised by different and sometimes unique methods ... three years ago an auction of model trains in Ohakune Lions Den raised $4,000. Several families in the Waimarino have already taken advantage of the Ozanam House service in Palmerston North and it is hoped that this latest contribution, together with future donations, will allow for an expansion of accommodation facilities for cancer patients and their families.
