Photogenic Flags remind of 'home'
A very popular view of the mountain from Ohakune is this one - particularly for photographers and especially those from overseas during the winter months. Over recent weeks we at the Bulletin have observed
people with cameras recording this scene from Goldfinch and Clyde Streets. We wondered why this was such a favoured spot so we decided to find out. We asked a number of these photographers why they had chosen this particular spot and they told us, in a variety of foreign accents: "It's the mountain and the flags ... they make us feel at home." It seems that the Rendezvous Dairy, with its 'united ski nations' flags, has indeed become the rendezvous for the shutterhappy international wintersports set on a fine day when there is a view of the mountain. John Schrier has been displaying these flags outside his dairy for eight
years and needs to replace them every two years. He gets them from Amsterdam in Holland. These in the picture are part of a new set which includes the flags of the following winter-sporting nations: USA, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, UK, Austria, France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Australia, Greece, Holland and New Zealand. He is awaiting delivery of the flags of Norway, Switzerland and Denmark to complete the set. There is perhaps no other dairy in the country that will feature so prominently in the photo albums of overseas tourists when they return home from their holiday in New Zealand and their visit to Ohakune.
