New Job Skill For Redundant Workers
A valuable new job skill has been obtained by more than 100 employees at Ford , New Zealand's car assembly plant in Lower Hutt with their passing of heavy trade truck licences. This follows a series of training programmes involving the written, theory and practical aspects of obtaini.ng a heavy truck driver's licence. The training programmes, organised by Ford New Zealand in conjunction with the Ministry of Transport, were held over the past three months. They resulted in 110 employees at the car assembly plant obtaining their heavy truck driver's licence. In addition to their licence, the employees have all received a special certificate commemorating their successful licence test result. The car assembly plant at Lower Hutt is to close by mid-1988. This follows an extensive modernisation programme, announced in January 1986, involving Ford New Zealand's relocation to one expanded site at Manukau City in Auckland.
