Cold Kiwi Rally Results
A record 2406 entrants were received for this year's Cold Kiwi motorcycle rally held annually at the summit of the Desert Road, 19km north of Waiouru. Cold Kiwi again lived up to its name - a light dusting of snow which soon disappeared, greeted early risers on Saturday morning. Competitors and spectators began arriving as early as 3pm on Friday afternoon, giving them time to
set up camp and prime their bikes for the following day. Trophies and prizes up for grabs included the cup for the tyre burnout competition, won by Mike Wilkins on a Suzuki lOOOcc who also set a new Cold Kiwi record by burning rubber for 4 minutes and 36 seconds. Overseas entrants trophy: LeRoy Knierim (USA); Roadbike Hill Climb: Mike Hogan (Puch 50); Trailbike Hill Climb: John Lupton; Roadbike wheel stand: David Parkin-
son (Yamaha RZ 350); Trailbike Wheel Stand: Craig Wilkie (Honda XL 500); Oldest Bike: 1941 'Indian'; Oldest Entrant: Doug Morris 67; Mr Cold Kiwi Award: 'Spider'; Best Bike: Honda Turbo 6 cylinder llOOcc, owned by Mike Rowlings; Tug'o'War: Taupo Motorcycle Club; Smallest Bike: Honda 90. 'Mr Cold Kiwi' earned his dubious title after an act of bravado when he 'streaked' through camp astride a motorcycle on what was a very chilly Saturday evening.
