Beef better without fat
Cutting the fat off your beef is one easy way to contribute to better health, the Department of Health has announced. Beef minus the fat reduces the energy (kilojoule) content of a meal. This is important for all meat eaters, especially those who are
overweight or have a family history of premature heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. An article just released by the Australian Health and Medical Research Council shows that the fat content of grilled steak or roast beef can be reduced by between one-third to a half in this way. There are visible and invisible fats in a person's diet. Cutting off fat is an easy way for beef eaters to reduce the visible fat in their diet. Lean beef is a major source of protein, zinc, iron, riboflavin, niacin, B6 and B12 in the New Zealand diet but none of these are contained in the fatty part of meat. The Department of Health's dietary guidelines for healthy eating, issued recently, advise not to eat too much fat.
