NZ ecologists visit TNP
Tongariro National park was the venue for a large gathering of ecologists from around the country who converged on the area for the recent 4day conference of the New Zealand Ecological Society. The 140 members were stationed in Turangi for the first three days with the fourth day spent in various . field trips within the National Park. Groups looked at the effect of the power scheme on the Tongariro River, vegetation, soil and people impact on the Park and vegetation changes over a period of 130 years in the Mangatepopo Valley. A number of the group then presented short papers, noting their observations and theories. Former National Park ranger John Newton, now based in Turangi, was involved in organising the visit which coincides with the Park's centennial celebrations this year. Mr Newton said Tongariro was
the ideal spot for such a conference as the area catered for the varied needs and interest of the professional visitors. A guest speaker at the conference was Dr Thomas Veblen from the University of Colorado, who addressed the group on topics of local significance including disturbance to New Zealand ecosystems. Department of Conservation officials from Tongariro National Park were on hand to offer assistance throughout the day.
