Chopper rescues skier
Two men in search of back-country skiing ran into difficulties on Ruapehu Sunday last week. The pair were hiking J near the "Watch Tower", above Tukino skifield on the Eastem slopes of the mountain, when one slipped and slid 100 to 150 metres down an icy slope. His companion was unable to reach him because of the ice so he set off for help. He met two Ton- ' gariro National Park employees near the crater, who called Park Headquarters. A helicopter piloted by Keith McKenzie from Taumarunui picked up Whakapapa ski patrol director Ian Goodison and flew to the scene. The accident victim was then flown off the mountain.
