'Local lads' graduate from Police College

Three local lads graduated as policemen last Thursday. They were Lyndon Kurukaanga, Kevin Dowman and Wiremu Rewiti. Family and friends attended the graduation ceremony which was held at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua. The officials in attendance were the Police Commissioner, the Commandant and the Wing Patron Ngaire Bond who has been a lecturer in the College since the early Trentham police school days until she retired this year. The 20-year old Lyndon is son of Pearl Turner but was brought up by his grandparents Kuru and Betty Kurukaanga of Islington Street, Raetihi. He was educated at the Raetihi Primary School and Ruapehu College where he gained University Entrance as well as the title of the top sportsman at the school. While at College he represented the Waimarino in the reps in Athletics and Softball as well as Wanganui Colts and Maori Colts in Rugby and various other rep teams. For the past two years he has worked for the Inland Revenue Department in Wellington. He has been posted to take up duties in Auckland central. Lyndon was among the prize winners when he was awarded the physical training trophy. Kevin Dowman is the second son of Margaret and

Lofty Dowman of Ward Street, Raetihi. He was educated at the Raetihi Primary School and Ruapehu College where he represented the college in the 1st XV and athletics. He worked for five years with his brother Robert at Dowman's Four Square Discounter in Raetihi before becoming successful in his application as a police recruit. Like Lyndon, Kevin has been posted to Auckland to take up duties at the Central Police Station. Kevin was among the ten prize winners taking first place in the instructor's prize. Wiremu Rewiti's graduation was interesting for many local elders who remember his parents Betty and Sam Rewiti, formerly of Station Road, Raetihi

and now of Wanganui. Wiremu who calls himself a Raetihi boy received only his primary school education at Raetihi and all

his secondary schooling was completed in Wanganui. He was posted to Wanganui Police District.
