Power Board name change

cont'd from p.l Waimarino and Kuratau-Tu-rangi areas to the south and west of the what is traditionally regarded as the King Country. Discussion centered on

various alternatives for a shorter, more popular common-use name - including 'Plateau Power' - but when Board member Fred Linstrom suggested a com-

petition be held to get the local community behind the name-change idea, this proposal was adopted. The question of cost of any such name-change was raised - printing, stationery, signwriting etc - but Board members were assured that any change that might be adopted would be introduced gradually by initially including the new name in existing designs rather than in a complete single-step overnight change. Not all Board members however were convinced of the need for a namechange. Board member June Baker was quite happy with the existing name - "I think we should retain the words 'King Country' for sentimental and historical reasons if for no other", she said. In what could be 'the quote of the week', Board chairman Ken Street replied "If we don't adopt a new name we will be history!".
