Motel rooms with views
For Waimarino visitors who choose to stay at the new Acacia Lodge Motel there are a few features to enjoy that are not shared by many motels. While guests have their own unit with separate bathroom and hot drink brewing facilities, they share a kitchen, dining and lounge area with other guests. This means while they have the privacy usually associated with a motel they can enjoy the "club" atmosphere of a ski lodge. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave oven and a dishwasher. But the feature that is
most likely to have people returning to the lodge is the magnificent, uninterrupted view of Ruapehu that each of the nine motel units command. Motel owners Des and Cherry Sutton have recently installed a spa bath that should prove popular with guests. The advantage of a spa bath over a spa pool, said Des Sutton, is that it is filled with fresh water for each use and therefore no chlorine is needed. The Suttons are not strangers to the motel business having managed the Ohakune Court Motel for seven years. Acacia Lodge Motel was built by Noel Shepherd and Phil Couch of Ohakune,
who were helped by three generations of SuttonsDes, his father Harry and Des' son Shane. Acacia Lodge Motel was opened by Ohakune Mayor Bill Taylor, after a sausage sizzle, champagne and a kissing competition on 8 August, with the "kisses". broadcast on radio Ski FM.
