Bad debts for Board

The amount of money lost to the King Country Electric Power Board through bad debts each year has steadily increased over the last decade. The most recent figures available show that a total of $13,910.77 was written off in the 1986/87 year through bad debts ($11,061.63) and sundry debtors ($2,849.74). These totals are made up from 65 bad debts ranging from as little as 17 cents in one case to as much as

$4,142.21 in another (this latter being a failed Ohakune business) and 26 sundry debtors with amounts ranging from $1.89 to $533.25. Now that the amounts which can be claimed through the Small Claims Tribunal have been increased, the Board hopes to recover its losses through this channel rather than having to resort to the expense of the normal court proceedings.
