Council accepts help from sailors
Ohakune's Jubilee Park forest walk had a windfall last week, in the shape of about sixty man hours of maintenance work from 17 Midshipmen from Tamaki Naval Base in Auckland. The midshipmen were in the Waimarino for some mountain craft experience, but the bad weather on Tuesday last week put paid to the plan so their leader, Lieutenant Commander Mike Rashleigh offered their service to the Borough Council.
The Council took up their offer and handed over some shovels, slashers, a sledge hammer, timber, gravel and a wheelbarrow and pointed the midshipmen in the direction of the park. The midshipmen are first year officer trainees at Tamaki and are due to graduate from the junior offi-
cers training course in a few weeks. Lt Cr Rashleigh said they regularly offer their services to local communities if their activities are .cut short. The main reason for heading for the snow, he said, was to get the trainees used to dealing with different environments.
