Ohakune-Karioi lacking commitment and fitness
Wanganui High School Old Boys were too strong for local senior team Ohakune-Karioi when they met on Rochfort Park last Saturday. Ohakune are probably not as oommitted and still lack fitness at this late stage of the season and so they let the game go after half time. They held the Wanganui team to an even and entertaining encounter in the first half. The Wanganui team played entertaining rugby, were quicker to the loose ball and supported the ball carrier well. Bruce Cranston, Graeme Pike and replacement Thomas Mareikura had good games for the Ohakune pack and Ray Brown and Whetu Mareikura were quite safe in the backline. Lachlan Harding scored an excellent try in the corner when he did not indicate a SMALLBORE Lyne Maru 99.6, Bob McGinniss 98.4, Matt Williams 97.4, Ken Summerhays 96.4, Roy Walkei 95.3, Aaron Summerhayt 88.0, Greg Newell 85.0, Dan Williams 77.0.
shot at goal from a penalty. Harding tapped the ball and ran straight through the surprised HSOB team to score. He later added a penalty goal. Former Northern Wanganui boys featured well in the Wanganui team. Kerry Whale (Taihape) and Bobby Brooks (Ohakune) scored great tries for Wanganui. The final score was 27-7 to Wanganui High School Old Boys. Ohakune Snr Reserves v Huia Snr Reserves Ohakune Senior Reserves played the Huia Senior Reserves in the early game on Rochfort Park in a pretty even encounter. A few silly mistakes by Ohakune resulted in Huia scoring points which lcd them to beat Ohakune 20-12. Paul Gestro had a fumbly day but he worked hard for the team as did William Taylor at halfback. Coach Kerry Drinkwater is still as cunning as ever on the field and seems to have retired far too early. A good entertaining game. Raetihi Seniors v Waverley Seniors Raetihi seniors are in
danger of being relegated to the 3 rd division if they lose to Counties next week on Horricks Park, following their loss against Waverley on Saturday. The two-hour drive through the Paraparas and Wanganui to Waverley highway must have taken its toll on the Raetihi lads when they took on the supposedly even team. While Raetihi were still trying to find their direction, the Waverley team shot off to any early halftime lead of 24-9. After halftime Raetihi had a sudden surge and came back, but the Waverley team was still too strong. Ivan Hall was the most penetrative player in the backline until he left the field with a fractured leg. Both he and Jeff Reid were the only players tackling. It did not help the Raetihi effort that they were left with a makeshift team but those playing out of position filled in well. Coach Parr must be worried that the last game is again to be played out of town next weekend as even he had to take to the field.
Thomas Waara was named player of the day with the final score 35-16 to Waverley. Ohakune Under 19 v Marton Athletic Under 19 At Ruapehu College grounds the Ohakune Under 19 team took on the Marton Athletic team in an exciting even encounter. Daniel Tehuia at hooker was named the player of
the day. Grant Barrett scored a try and Warren Brown dropped a goal for Ohakune with the local boys scoring a win of 7-6. Raetihi Snr Reserves v Armoured Raetihi were totally outgunned by the Armoured team when they were beaten 21-0. Although the Raetihi forwards were able to match the Armoured pack on occasions. The
penetrative Armoured backline did all the damage against the brave Raetihi youngsters. Final score 210. Ruapehu College 1st 15 couldn't get a team together to travel down to play Collegiate or to go to Pukekohe yesterday. However the 2nd 15 fielded a team and won their game against Taihape College 3rd 15, 43-6.
