There's room for more at the Sunbeam
Sunbeam Club building in 1978. . The work at the Sunbeam carried out by Eastern Builders of Wanganui and many subcorrtractors, involved building an extension to the bar area on the north side of the lodge. The extension is totally taken up in lounge area but allows for the restaurant to use some of the space previously set aside for cocktail bar patrons. The existing fire place, which is open on all four sides now divides the restaurant and cocktail lounge. The whole area has been re-carpeted and new drapes have been hung. Extra furniture has been purchased to match the existing restaurant dining and lounge suites.
One of the Waimarino's top licensed dining establishments the Sunbeam, has reopened this winter with bigger and better facilities. Thanks to the extensions at the Sunbeam more people can enjoy the experience of eating and drinking at the restaurant that is thought by many to be the best in the Waimarino. While it is acceptable to be seen at the Sunbeam dressed casually, the service, 'modern international' cuisine and its presentation are of the highest standard. Entrees at the Sunbeam includq Thai style squid served on a bed of greens and olives, marinated scallops served slightly chilled in their marinade of tomato and turmeric. Two of the main course dishes are: pork fillet wrapped in bacon baked with sherry and cream sauce, garnished with a julienne of apple; and vegetarian fare such as a pie of layered bean, spinach, celery and walnut served with a homemade tomato salsa.
In the cocktail bar concoctions such as pina coladas and margueritas as well as a cocktail of the day are served. One is the "Calypso" which is a blend of galliano, kahlua, whipped cream, chocolate and nutmeg. Cocktail sfppers at the Sunbeam now have a new light and spacious area to relax in after their day's
skiing, and the restaurant seating has increased to 80. Guests at the Sunbeam have four new architecturally designed motel units to accommodate them along with the nine units that have been bought or built by the owners of the Sunbeam, Mike and Bonnie Bramley, since taking over the old
