Pipiriki School news

Two Form 2 pupils from Pipiriki School, Lisa Hema and Roberta Te Huia, both 12, recently sat exams working towards scholarships to Turakina Maori Girls College. Only five such scholarships are awarded a year nationwide. The girls sat three one-hour papers on English, Mathematics and General Knowledge. Pipiriki School Principal Josephine Mikaere said the results will be known within the next few weeks. ■ ★★★ Waimarino Public Health Nurse Leigh Berry is currently running a comprehensive Red Cross first aid course at Pipiriki School, with the entire school taking part. The course involves 8-10 sessions of learning about all aspects of first aid, from how to treat minor cuts, to attending broken limbs. Mrs Berry is optimistic most of the children will attain their Junior First Aid Certificates at the end of the course. ★ ★★ The school is involved with a special on-going unit of work on photography, which has proved very popular with the children. They were visited recently by two Rural Advisers from the Wanganui Education Board who demonstrated the technique of producing 'photograms' - objects displayed on light-sensitive paper and developed in the same manner as films.
