Combined effort to spruce up corner

A combined effort by Raetihi's business community, Raetihi School and the public has made it possible to create a visual delight out of the area of town known as Four Square corner, in Seddon Street. The tiny corner which is a popular rest area and a bus stop, now boasts a rustic wishing well and red cobblestones. President of the Raetihi G arden Club Leigh Ryland and Margaret Haitana initiated the venture and conducted a word-of-mouth survey to decide the colour of the cobblestones. Mrs Ryland also approached the pupils of Raetihi School to purchase cobblestones at $1 each, which raised just over $100. Mayor Garrick Workman donated $100 from his Honorarium. The laborious task of laying the sand and cobblestones was undertaken by Craig Ryland and Brian Haitana. Cobblestones were supplied at a substantially reduced price by Schroeder Concrete, Manunui. The centre of attention is the newly constructed wishing well, built free-of-charge by businessman

Colin Frederickson from materials donated by the

Raetihi Borough Council. The well was filled with

plants donated by members of the Raetihi Garden Club.
