Weekend skiing

More than 4000 people skied at Turoa on Sunday in good weather but on hard and icy snow. The field was closed on Saturday due to higl winds. The High tJoon T Bar wa opened after midday once the snow had 'softened, while the Jumbo T Bar remained closed due to the ice hazard. All other facilities on Turoa were operating on Sunday including the new licensed bar and restaurant in the Alpine Lodge at the base area. The bar and restaurant opened for the first time on Sunday. Whakapapa was open both days on the weekend with drizzle and poor visibility on Saturday and similar conditions to Turoa on Sunday. About 6500 people visited Whakapapa on Sunday. Parking was at a premium on both fields, with Turoa's full by mid-morning. Free shuttle buses were run for skiers who were forced to park below the loop road. At Whakapapa the car parks were full by 9 am on their busiest day this season.
