Kohanga Reo topic at seminar
Raetihi Marae was the venue for a seminar on the principles and Philosophy of Kohanga Reo over the weekend. A number of dignitaries and representatives from Kohanga Reo groups around the North Island attended. Invited guests included Kohanga Reo National Trust Board chairman John Bennett and delegates from the Maori Education Foundation Awhina Whanau, Hema Levaillant, Vitarina Harris and Hine Potaka, all of Rotorua. The group were invited to the Marae to demonstrate their work which involves working with natural materials.The women travel around New Zealand giving support to pre-school and Kohanga groups and have a bi-lingual, bi-cultural
approach, according to Mrs Potaka. The focus is on child development in relation to Taha Maori.
Mrs Potaka said they aim to revert back to nature and endeavour to teach about ihe spirituality or Wairua, that exists in all natural
materials. The group demonstrated how to use natural raw materials in the formation of traditional Maori crafts at the hui.
