Cleaver Shield goes to Ohakune-Karioi senior reserves
Ohakune-Karioi recorded its first win in the Wanganui Rugby Union's Division One Championship competition on Saturday beating Wanganui Pirates 34-14. Once again Lachlan Harding was the star of the team. His flair and dashing play earned the team 18 points. Richard Haugh, Kerry Alabaster and Richard Mathews played well in the forwards, as did Nuts Morgan who had a great game in the lineouts. Hugh Donald scored a try and tackled well. Ohakune-Karioi Senior Reserves v Navy The Ohakune-Karioi Senior Reserves were too strong in the forwards when they challenged Navy for the Cleaver Shield. The team, which is back to full strength, took a while to settle into the game but after twenty minutes they clicked, producing good backline movements with Andrew Scott and Terrance McLeod shining out. James Albert and Dave Cliff had good games on the loose and excellent driving from Thomas Mareikura and Neil Woods contributed to the effort. The Navy forwards had their moments but lacked fitness. The backline played well putting Ohakune under pressure several times. The final score was Ohakune 20 Navy 4. Thus Ohakune won the much sought after Cleaver Shield in the Senior Reserve Competition. Raetihi Senior Reserves v Panthers Meanwhile, in Raetihi the Senior Reserves went down to panthers 20-13. The game was not good for Raetihi in the first half with Panthers leading 16-3. Raetihi had a better second half with Jason Tairoa and Lance Ruki scoring tries. Darren McDonnell kicked a conversion and one penalty for Raetihi. The Panthers were slightly stronger all round. Raetihi Seniors v WHSOB 2nds Raetihi Seniors seemed to be going from bad to
worse when they played Wanganui High School Old Boys 2nds on Spriggens Park on Saturday. Raetihi was down 13-0 after 15 minutes and it looked bad for them but after half time Coach Parr asked the team to open up the game thereby playing an untypical running game. Shane Harvey and James Renata scored two of the best tries for the team so far this season. Thomas Waara, back to kicking, landed one conversion. Ruapehu College 1st XV v St Augustine's At St Augustine's the Ruapehu College first fifteen went down to the strong city school 62-0 after beating Tongariro College 29-16 four days previous. The Ohakune urtder-19 team had a bye for the weekend.
