College compete in Maori speech competition

Ruapehu College again showed promise in this year's recent Central North Island Maori Speech Competition. The team of seniors Maxine George and Wendy Turanga, and Juniors Mathew Mareikura and Dale Hipango, performed very well in what was a high standard of competition, according to teacher Merrilyn George. Twenty-one schools from the Wanganui, Taranaki and Manawatu Districts took part in the competition which had both Maori and English speaking categories. Mathew Mareikura was placed second in the Junior Maori 'Rawhiti Ihaka' section, with a speech on the value of Maori language in society.
