Letter to the Editor

In reply to P. S. Bishop's letter criticising the actions of the Waimarino County Council in connection with the mountain road: The cost of maintenance of the mountain road is wholly subsidized by the National Roads Board so costs the ratepayers absolutely nothing. Prior to the 86/87 financial year all capital development of the road was also paid for by the N.R.B. Since tlien there has been a change with the N.R.B. paying 75 percent and Turoa Skifields Ltd coming up with the other 25 percent of the cost.

With regard to the $50 annual charge recently introduced it was felt that with this charge a fairer distribution of administration costs across the board would be achieved for all ratepayers in the County. Some of the sections in Rangataua have a rate of $5 which doesn't pay for its collection. It is hoped in the future to do more work in Rangataua with more money being collected from this area.

Heinold
