Ohakune District Court
The following cases were heard by Judge J.E. Ryan of Palmerston North in the Ohakune District Court iast Thursday. Sergeant Neil Coker of Ohakune, appeared for the police and Traffic Officer GJ. Webster of Taumarunui appeared for the Ministry of Transport. Charmaine Larisha Green, 25, solo mother of Raetihi, appeared on one charge of possessing utensils for the purpose of committing an offence under the Misuse of Diugs Act on 20 March and one charge of peimitting premises to be used for that purpose on the same date. She was remanded without plea on bail of $750 to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July. Counsel D.G. Harvey. Alan Haitana, 20, unemployed of no fixed abode, appeared on one charge of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit a crime therein on 18 June and on one charge of unlawfully taking a Holden Belmont motor vehicle valued at $2000 on 18 April. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July for the taking of pleas. Bail of $750 with a surety of a like amount was set. *** Graeme Raymond Hewitt, 32, carpenter of Tauranga, pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified at Ohakune on 8 March. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 24 September for a defended hearing. Garth Hiroti, 22, unemployed of Raetihi, was remanded at laige without plea to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July to face a charge of possession of cannabis in Raetihi on 12 June. Counsel: P. Brown. ★ ★★ Krishane Hiroti, 20, shearer of Raetihi, pleaded not guilty to one charge of re-entering licensed premises (the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi) having been removed by police and to one charge of refusing to leave when ordered to do so. He was remanded on bail of $300 to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 24 September for a defended hearing. ★ ★★ Donald Daniel Kui, 24, labourer of Ohakune, was to have appeared to face one charge of intentionally obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duties, one charge of disorderly behaviour in Seddon Street and one charge of refusing to comply
with an order to leave licensed premises. All three charges related to the same incident in Raetihi on 4 June. Failing his appearance in Court a warrant for arrest was issued. Ricky John McLeod, 20, unemployed of Ohakune, pleaded not guilty to one charge of refusing to comply with an order to leave licensed premises (the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi) on 4 June and to one charge of obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duties on the same date. He was remanded on bail of $500 to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 24 September for a defended hearing. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. ★ ★★ Vernon Leslie McLeod, 18, trainee carver of Ohakune, appeared in Court for sentence on a charge of burglary from the Ohakune-Karioi Rugby Sports Club to which he had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing aswell as to face two new charges relating to an incident in Raetihi on 4 June. He pleaded guilty to a charge of refusing to comply with an order to leave licensed premises and to a charge of being on licensed premises (the Ruapehu Hotel) while under the age of 20 years. On the burglary charge he was convicted and sentenced to a 6-month community care programme with the Waimarino Resource Centre and ordered to reside where directed, to undertake work as directed and to undertake training or counselling courses as directed. It was noted that he had already made reparation of $129 as ordered on the burglary charge. On the charge of being on licensed premises under the age of 20 years he was convicted and discharged. Duncan Vincent Metekingi, 34, shearer of Raetihi, appeared on one charge of acquiring a controlled pesticide in contravention of the law and to one charge of peimitting premises to be used for the commission of an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act on 12 June. He was remanded at large to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July for the taking of pleas. Counsel: P. Brown. ★ Hillary Pinihita Metekingi, 29, housewife of Raetihi, appeared to face a charge of possession of a cannabis plant in Raetihi on 12 June. She was remanded at large to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July for the taking of a plea. Counsel: P. Brown. George Ashwood Pekamu, 20, landscaper of Ohakune, appeared to face one charge of refusing to comply with an order to leave licensed premises (the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi) on 4 June and one charge of being on licensed premises while under the age of 20 years. On a charge of causing intentional damage to a police vehicle by slashing the tyres he was allowed to change his plea from guilty to not guilty. On the first two charges he was convicted and fined $75 court costs $55 and $70 court costs $55 re-
spectively. On the not guilty plea he was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 24 September for a defended hearing. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. ★ ★★ Peter Arthur Phillips, 22, unemployed fisherman of Raetihi, appeared on one charge of possession of cannabis in Raetihi on 12 June and one one charge of obstructing a police constable in his powers under the Misuse of Drugs Act. A further charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm was withdrawn at the request of the police. He was remanded on bail of $500 without plea to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July. *** William Peter Pikari, 24, scrubcutter of Raetihi, was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July on a charge of using insulting words in Raetihi on 1 2 June. ★ ★★ Amber Lamer Mary Powhare, 20, beneficiary of Wanganui, was remanded at large without plea to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July to face a charge. of possession of cannabis in Raetihi on 12 June. Counsel: P. Brown. *** Andrew Mark Price, 20, soldier of Waiouru, pleaded guilty to one charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on SH1 south of Waiouru on 6 June and to one charge of making a false statement to police about the incident. On the first charge he was convicted and fined $150 court costs $55. On the second charge he was convicted and fined $100, court costs $55 and ordered to make reparation of $27.69 to the police. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. ★ ★★ Neil Noel Malcolm Randall, 19, fitter's assistant of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the signal of a police constable in uniform. Court heard how defendant had ridden off on his motor cycle followed by a police car after he had been signalled to stop on SH49 at Karioi. Defendant had then ridden his motor cycle into Karioi State Forest where the pursuing police vehicle could not follow. However, he was apprehended later when he emerged from the forest. Defendant could not explain his actions. He was charged and fined $150, court costs $55. Heath Singe, soldier of Waiouru, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on 26 December 1986. Court heard how defendant, a keen motor-cyclist, had been riding a new 750cc machine on Boxing Day when, on applying the brakes under pressure had skidded into a rear of a tuming car. Defendant's commanding officer from the ATG in Waiouru provided a verbal testimonial on his behalf. He was charged and fined $150, court costs $55. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. ★ ★ A Esmeralda Esmay Takerei, 17, unemployed of Ohakune, was to have appeared on a charge of breaching a
Periodic Detention order which had been imposed in the Ohakune District Court last month. Following her failure to appear in Court last Thursday a warrant for arrest was issued. ★ ★★ Grant Lionel Taylor, 26, self employed automotive electrician of Wellington, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess blood alcohol in Miro Street, Ohakune, on 14 May and to one charge of operating a motor vehicle without a current Warrant of Fitness on the same date when stopped during a random check. On the first charge he was convicted and fined $350, court costs $55 and disqualified from driving for an indefinite period the minimum being two years this being defendant's second such offence. He was ordered to attend an alcoholic assessment centre and pay the fees thereof of $165. An order to pay medical fees of $82 and DSIR analyst's fees of $54 was also made. On the charge of driving without a current Warrant of Fitness he was convicted and fined $75, court costs $55. Counsel: P. Brown. Raphael Materei Tinirau, 24, unemployed of Raetihi, appeared on one charge of cultivating a prohibited plant (cannabis), one charge of possessing a prohibited plant and one charge of possessing instruments for the commission of an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act He was remanded on bail of $1,000 without plea to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 23 July. Gary Edwin Watson, 19, shearing presser of Taihape, was to have appeared on a charge of intentionally damaging a plate glass window at Ohakune Shoes in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune on 1 2 June. At the written request of defendant the case was transferred to be heard in the Taihape District Court on 20 July. ★ ★★ A 16-year old youth who had earlier faced seven charges involving theft, burglary, receiving and possession and cultivation of cannabis in the Childrens and Young Persons Court, had the case transferred to the District Court for more appropriate sentencing. Court hear how defendant: had attempted to enter a dwelling house in Pitt Street, Raetihi, on 12 January; had stolen a video recorder, 8 video cassette tapes, an electronic calculator, a clock radio and stereo headphones to the value of $2,930 from a dwelling house on the Parapara Road south of Raetihi on 17 January; had cultivated a prohibited plant (cannabis) on 23 January; had received a wetsuit valued at $100 on 19 January knowing it to have been stolen or dishonestly obtained; had broken into and entered the Raetihi Borough Council building in Seddon Street on 3 June; had broken into and entered McLean's Stationery premises in Seddon Street on 6 June; had possession of cannabis oil and syringe. He was sentenced to a period of corrective training. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Defended cases next week.
