Okahu bull prices firm

The sale of 28 rising 2-year old Polled Hereford Bulls owned by Pat and Kelly O'Neill of 'Okahu Stud', Ohura Road, Raetihi was held at their farm on Monday of last week. The Okahu polled Herefords averaged $1,900 a head, with the top price of $2,800 paid by Jack Mott of Karioi for the bull 'Okahu Comet'. Prices were "quite satisfactory" according to Mr Pat O'Neill, who said that this year's average was up on 1986 prices but very much down on prices paid in 1985 which was a very

good year. The average price per head in 1985 was $3000. Stud Herefords were first introduced into the Raetihi district in 1917, when the late A.P. O'Neill, father of Pat O'Neill, purchased heifers at Parorangi Stud and used Bushy Park Bulls. Over the years the Okahu Stud have won many prizes in shows around the country and have consistently fetched high prices at their saies over the last 17 years. The auctioneer's note in the Okahu Stud book stated that: "The uniformity and ability to shift and thrive of Okahu cattle needs no

description, as they have gone from the far north to j the deep south over aj number of years." This year the auctioneers were Elders Pastoral and Wrightson Dalgety Ltd operating in conjunction. Saies and prices paid on the day were as follows: J. Mott (Karioi) $2800, Fields Track Station $2500, H. Griffiths (Wanganui) $2500, Sue Brothers (Karioi) $1600, J. Mott $1400, Arahanui Station (Mangamahu) $2500, Pa Hill Station $2100, W. Tapa (Wang. River) $2300, J. Meyer (Raetihi) $1700, The Shades (Mangamahu) $2700, F.J. O'Neil and Sons (Kakatahi) $2400, Sue Brothers $1450, Sue Brothers $1600, Glenaladale Farms (Manga - mahu) $1850, J.B. Klue (Wanganui) $1150, J.C.
