OFFICER CADETS VISIT MARAE

This group of 34 officer cadets from the Army Training Group in Waiouru, together with their instructors, were welcomed onto the Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune on Sunday. The cadets, 16 of whom will graduate at Waiouru tomorrow, undertake visits to the marae to ensure they receive a cultural education in maori tanga and learn how to conduct themselves in such situations. This group of cadets included representatives from Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Tonga and Australia as well as New Zealand. On this occasion the Maungarongo Marae was also taking the opportunity of saying farewell to a regular visitor and friend from the Army. Former Major Sam Hollander, the chief instructor at the Cadet School, has been promoted to Lieut Colonel and will be leaving the area to take up a new posting.
