Top spot for ski shop

The old Turners and Growers building at the Ohakune Junction will be dispensing rental ski gear in a few weeks mstead of the bags of carrots that have been going out the door for years. The property was sold at auction last year and has recently been handed over to the new owners, Paul Scarf and Ian Helton. The new owners along with Ian Heappy and Graeme Jackson are setting up a ski hire and ski shop in the old produce shed. A name for the new business is yet to be finalised but "Powderhorn Ski Barn" is a name favoured by two of the partners. The ski hire will have about 250 sets of ski equipment for hire, half of it new gear and half used. Manager Ian Heappy said they were aiming to provide the best service in Ohakune to the skier. Mr Heappy has claimed in the past to be Ohakune's most experienced ski mechanic. "We are not aiming to be a budget ski hire" said Mr Heappy. The business will include a retail outlet but the stock they carry this season will depend on what is available from the suppliers. The ski hire will have pienty of car parking space, including five covered car parks for skiers' convenience. Mr Heappy said the council has asked that the parking area be sealed.
