A NEW METAL TECHNOLOGY
A new metal treatment technology which can give conventional iron and steel the same corrosion resistant surface as stainless steel and may have particular significance in the motor vehicle industry has been developed by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation. The new resin coating system provides the benefits of existing technologies which can be used independently, but not together. Conventional systems can provide surface hardening or surface smoothing, but not both. Mitsubishi Metal Corporation's new coating involves
the application of a resin to the metal in a similar way to electroplating. The resin is then hardened by heating. This uniform coating, which has a standard thickness of 15 microns, (considerably thicker than conventional paint), is hardened by heating. It can be applied to iron, steel or copper and is very economical. For example, iron, which is more workable and less expensive than stainless steel, when treated with the coating becomes harder and gains a corrosion resistance similar to that of stainless steel.
