Power Take-Off For Four-Wheeler

FOUR-wheeled motorcycles take on yet another new dimension with the introduction by Yamaha of a model with power take-off for the operation of machinery and accessories. Named "Terrapro", it's a 350cc machine; a specially imported demonstration model, which makes its New Zealand debut at the farming Fieldays in Hamilton this week. The new vehicle uses a well proven 4-stroke SOHC engine, has dual-range transmission with five forward speeds in both high and low ratio, reverse gear, and shaft drive. But its newest feature is the power take-off unit.

Driven off the engine independently of the rear-wheels, it means the operator does not have to control two machines at once. A simple governor lever adjusts engine speed to the PTO, which is operated through 31 inch, low-edged, cogged vee belts. As with all Yamaha fourwheelers, Terrapro has carrying racks front and rear and a hitch for trailers. There's also a "snorkel" air intake to prevent the engine stalling when operated in shallow water, and twin headlights for night operation. Merv Sharp, general manager of Moller Yamaha motorcycle division, says

farmer reaction will determine whether Terrapro becomes a permanent feature of the range.
