Rugby from "Lineout"

Ohakune-Ratana The main game at Rochfort Park between Ohakune and Ratana Senior A teams was set to be a right royal clash with Ratana having done well leading up to this game and Ohakune not faring so well last week against Utiku Old Boys. The Ohakune team were without their fastest loose forwards in Richard Mathews and Steve Cameron and Kellick Harding in the backs. In the game we saw the return of Kerry Alabaster as lock, Steve Gordon who played a very hard game on

the flank and new player Darren Griffin on the wing. The game turned o'ut to be one-sided eventually. Three minutes from the start Ray Brown (1st five) who played a brilliant game all afternoon made a break and put 2nd five Robbie Manson (player/coach) in for a try near the posts, (converted by Lachlan Harding). Ten minutes later Lachlan Harding put over a penalty after an infringement by Ratana forwards and then it was all on for Ohakune with exciting breaks made by Lachlan Harding, Darren Griffin, Steve Gordon and Ricky Harding. The small crowd were treated to some excellent rugby as Ratana slowly but sadly went to the pack. There were moments of frustration when Ratana who had practised hard for this game and the local team were getting niggly resulting in Graeme Pike and Ricky Harding getting sent to the 'sin bin'. When Ratana made breaks there was no support from fellow players. Coach Murray Ririnui was not pleased with his forward's efforts. Former rep Dennis Ngatarere had a good game as first five for Ratana as did Riwaru Tihema when he

came on as a replacement in the Ohakune team. Nuts Morgan seems to have regained his lineout jumping prowess that he had two seasons ago. All in all it was good to see Ohakune back to last year's form. Player of the day was Richard Haugh and the final score was 43-3 to Ohakune. Senior Reserves The Ohakune Senior Reserves had a very good result with a win of 22-12 at Irirangi with Michael Callihan standing out in the forwards which eventually wore the Irirangi forwards down. Raetihi -WHSOB Over in Raetihi the Raetihi teams who have had two convincing wins in their last two games went down to Wanganui High School Old Boys seconds team 6-7. Raetihi's points came from a try by Peter Arahanga converted by the youthful Thomas Waara. It was a disappointing result for Captain Marshall Tangaroa who played well and leads by example. Tangaroa and Coach Parr who one day hope to lead the team out of the second division were impressed by the excellent crowd support. Saturday saw the return. of Bernie McGahan who came on as replacement for David Wilcox. Cont'd page 14

Though Rangi Bishop is not as fit as he usually is he played well. It's a pity that Raetihi had goal kicking woes because I'm told that Raetihi could have won the game had their kicker bagged the penalty shots in front of the goal. Player of the match must surely go to Michael West. Raetihi-Panthers Raetihi Senior Reserves lost to a heavier, better drilled Panthers team in Waiouru 9-30. Most of the Waiouru Panthers' points came through superior forward work and they scored most of their points in the backline. Ricci Brown who has not played rugby for three seasons played a skilful game but tended to kick too much. The try of the day must surely have been scored by Jason Taiaroa after Robert Harris made an intercept and ran fifty metres and then passed to the big 17-year old forward whc supported him for the full run. However Harris missed that conversion from the front of the goal. Waiouru-Huia Waiouru Seniors lost to Huia 38-6 in Taihape. It is said that Waiouru could have had more success but they were all individuals. Sunday saw the two Northern Rep temas play the Taumarunui Sub Union teams with victory for both Northern Wanganui teams. Both teams included several players from the Waimarino teams. Outstanding games were had by Tihema, Renata, Tangaroa and especially Thomas Waara who played and scored tries in both games. Results Colts game 30-4 to Northern. Seniors game 40-10 to Northern. A great weekend for Ohakune with three wins.

Sundry office equipment including calculators, seat covers and pencils were taken. On Thursday aftemoon a house in Queen St Raetihi was broken into. No property was taken in the incident. Overnight 1 June a house in Grey St, Raetihi was unlawfully entered and a large quantity of cash and jewellery taken. On Friday afternoon a second house in Grey St was broken into when the occupant had gone out for five minutes. Some cash was taken in the break-in. On Thursday afternoon a house in King St, Raetihi was unlawfully entered. A small amount of cash was taken. On this occasion the occupant had left the house for three hours. Ohakune Police remind Raetihi residents to lock up their homes at all times when unoccupied, day or night. Also on Thursday afternoon, following a disturbance in the Public Bar of the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi, Ohakune Police Arrested five persons on various offences. One of the offenders appeared in the Wanganui District Court on Friday. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court for sentence on charges of intentional darnage, being a minor in a bar and two charges of failing to leave a licensed premises. The other four persons will be appearing in the Ohakune District Court on 25 June 1987.
