Truck stuck on mountain

On Sunday an attempt was made to drive an ex-army Bedford truck up onto Broadbents Flat at Turoa Skifield. The truck left the road behind Turoa Skifield's ticket office and followed an old track until it ran into difficulties. The vehicle, which was carrying a group of people thought to be from Auckland and estimated to

be more than twenty, became stuck and in the attempt to drive it out of a ditch the rear wheel drive shaft was wrecked. Witnesses said they could see no way of removing the vehicle with an ordinary tow truck or four-wheel drive vehicle. Under National Park bylaws it is an offence to drive a vehicle in a National Park off a formed, public road or to abandon a

vehicle in National Park off a designated public road. Ohakune conservator Lisle Irwin said the filing of charges against the owners and/or driver of the vehicle would be considered. Most witnesses to the incident expressed amazement at the attempt to drive the vehicle to where it ran into difficulty.
