Teachers learn from Army

A group of careers advisers from schools throughout New Zealand visited the Army's tough regimental training camp at Waiouru earlier this month. They were there to see Army life for themselves and so be better equipped to advise their students with firist-hand information about military careers. The 32-member group, including a vocational guidance officer from the Hastings Department of Labour Office, was treated to a whirlwind tour of units within the Army's main training establishment during a week-long stay. They listened to presentations, talked to soldiers and tried their hand at some basic soldier skills - including the confidence course. They also shared meals with soldiers of all ranks in their respective messes. The group enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Army and get to know its people and functions. Many said that their eyes had been opened and that misconceptions they had fostered over the years were unfounded. Today's youngsters are looking for variety and challenge in their careers, the group said. After the visit teachers felt they could return to their schools feeling more able to advise students on the range and opportunity of careers the Army offers.
