Lodge given nod

The Waimarino County Council and the Council's town planner have agreed to approve an application by Mr and Mrs Jeffrey Walker of Auckland, to build an accomodation lodge at Makakahi, about 20 minutes from Raetihi, providing some conditions are met. Mr and Mrs Walker put forward their proposal to the Waimarino County Council at their monthly meeting. The couple propose, to erect and operate an accommodation lodge, including the provision of food and refreshment facilities on site. The lodge, to be named 'Rivervale', will be able to accommodate between 3050 people and will consist of six self-contained one bedroomed chalets, a utility building, manager's

residence, and a central building which will offer communal lounge, dining and bar facilities. Mr and Mrs Walker are aiming to open the lodge in May of next year. Objecdons to the proposed construction of the lodge closed 21 April 1987. An objection was received from the R ang i tikei- W ang anui Catchment Board, which said that the sewage disposal requirements of such a lodge must be adequately planned to prevent such problems as contamination of runoff and contamination of adjacent water bodies. The Board recommended that Council withold approval of the application until the applicant had submitted plans of a suitably designed sewage disposal system and that the propossal would not adversely affect water and soil values of the surrounding area.

A letter was also received from the Wanganui Area Health Board, which reminded Council that it must be completely satisfied that the safe disposal of effluent can be achieved on the site and a portable water supply is provided. No water is to be used for drinking unless it is adequately disinfected and a supplementary supply (subject to Catchment Board approval) may be used for toilet operation, without needing treatment. Roof water collection and storage must be provided if there is no suitable supplementary source, on the basis of 23,500 litres for every five persons to be accommodated, he said. Council agreed to approve the application, provided conditions relating to services on site, parking requirements, disposal of wastes and building regulations are met by the applicants.
