Councillors work on drains
An Ohakune Borough Council job long overdue is currently underway in Miro St. An inadequate storm water pipe that was outgrown with the expansion of the street was given some attention last week. The nine inch pipe which runs from in front of the Ohakune Borough Council office, nearly the length of the block, a distance of 170 metres, was joined in the line by a second 12 inch pipe which is expected to double the efficiency of the system. Work on installing the second pipe began last Thursday by contractor E.E. Sue and Son and borough councillor Alan Goddard. Mr Sue who has been contracting in the area for four years was successful in his tender for the job. Four other tenders were submitted. Mr Goddard who is officially retired is assisting Mr Sue in laying
the sections of pipe. He was the Ohakune Borough Foreman for over 10 years and has been involved in borough work in Taihape since 1945. Mr Goddard said he was aware of only two houses on the block that have direct drainage of storm water from their roof to the drain. The other properties use soak-holes, he said. One property in the block which has particularly poor drainage will be getting better drainage in the future. Plans include installing perforated PVC piping, bedded in stone chips. The ground water will then percolate through it into the storm water drain. The only area of sealed road that was excavated during the work was on the corner of Miro and Ayr Streets where a manhole was fitted. The trench to enclose the length of pipe is one and a half metres in depth. Work is expected to be completed in 7-10 days, depending on the weather.
