Ohakune cyanide hazard

Recent incidents of unauthorised laying of cyanide posion around the Waimarino area is concerning local police. Ohakune Police Sergeant Neil Coker said that cyanide has been discovered in at least two areas and was laid without authority. Cyanide paste and flour lures were discovered along road verges, picnic areas and on picnic tables in Ohakune Lakes Reserve. The Police, with the assistance of a member of the public removed all the poison they could find in the Reserve, but Sergeant Coker warns there may still be some lying around that was missed. Sergeant Coker said that people who are laying poison in such areas or in fact anywhere without authority are liable for prosecution. "In order to lay poison for the purpose of killing possums, you must first have a licence from the

Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and also have the permission of land owners where poison is to be laid," he said. Karioi State Forest is another area where poison has been found. Cyanide paste was found along the road frontage from Karioi Forest Headquarters up to Winstone Pulp Industries on State Highway 49. Karioi Forest Superintendant Dennis Brown and staff will in future be patrolling the area. Persons found laying poison or setting traps will be prosecuted. Sergeant Coker warned parents to be aware of recent incidents and to keep a close watch on young children. Cyanide paste is green in colour and in some instances may be camouflaged with flour. The paste looks similar to toothpaste. Sergeant Coker said that even a small quantity of the poison would be lethal to a child.
