Waimarino pig hunters generate interest
The Waimarino Pig Hunting Club's annual weigh-in held on Queen's Birthday weekend always manages to attract a sizeable crowd and this year was no exception. Locals and some visitors passing through Raetihi gathered expectantly outside the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi to await the boars and sows that were hunted over the weekend. Hunter Duncan Metekingi, who is a regular entrant in the competition, this year took first prizes in both heaviest boar and heaviest sow category. Results: heaviest boar: Duncan Metekingi (1) 185 lb, Baldy Haitana and Colin Wise (2) 180 lb. Heaviest sow: Duncan Metekingi (1) 61 lb, Robin Haugh (2) 55 lb. The children's section was well attended, with many entries of possums and an enormous eel on show. Twenty-six entries were received for the main competition.
