They can really can-can

It was a night of gaiety and glamour. French perfume, French bread and French underwear - that was "Renee's Cafe", held at the Ohakune Club on Saturday night. Renee, ever the charming host, greeted patrons at the door with a smile and a murmered word of welcome. About 150 people turned out for the night, some in the spirit of the occasion complete with beret and brassiere. Tres chic', or Wow!' was the catch phrase for the evening. French peasant girls and 'harlots' featured in the line-up for the most creative dress. The audience were honoured by the presence of 'Marlena Deep-ditch', fresh from her sell-out tour of the Ruatiti. Ms Deepditch performed a moving rendition of 'Lady of the Lamplight' that included a masterful piece of acting which was meant to make the audience think she had forgotten the words. A debut performance was made by a geriatric can-can ensemble who attempted to show 'les petites enfants' how it was done. Moving performances were made by two local identities who recited the works Of Pam Ayres and the revised editions of two well-known fairy tales -

namely 'Jacques and the Beanstalk' and 'Fifi La Few and the Seven Dwarfs'. Dancers and talented singing families also featured in the night's entertainment. One of the organisers, Val Parkes said she was "absolutely delighted" with the response to the show, which raised nearly $600 towards D.E.B.R.A., the organisation involved in research and the treatment of Epidermolysis Bullosa, a painful skin condition. "It was an excellent night and a terrific success," she said. "The dancers, singers and solo performers were

absolutely superb. and soul into making it a Everyone put their heart marvellous evening."
