King Country winner of fleece contest
The trophy for the three most valuable fleeces submitted to the inaugural Wrightson National Cashmere Fleece Contest -has gone to Cashmere Goat Stud (NZ) Ltd of Taumarunui. The fleeces, worth a total of $104.79, earned the company the award for the competition's most successful competitor. The contest, sponsored by Wrightson Dalgety, is held annually to promote the cashmere industry in New Zealand. Entries we-re judged according to the dollar return per fleece as measured by the Australian Wool Testing Authority. Commercial value was determined by market price at time of judging. Wrightson Dalgety Wool Manager Mr Allan Sturzaker presented the awards at the Second International Cashmere Conference dinner held recently at Lincoln
College. The most valuable fleece award, won by Mr & Mrs David Lawrence of Oyster Shell Stud, Martinborough, cut 468 gms of 18.87 micron fleece, with a value of $45.40. The same fleece won the trophy for the heaviest weight of cashmere under 19 microns. For a fleece valued at $39.20 cutting 278 gms at 15.45 microns the Cashmere Goat Stud (NZ) Ltd took the trophy for the most valuable fleece under 16.5 microns. The award for the finest fleece over 100 gms of cashmere went to Valley Partnership for a 128 gms fleece of 16.12 microns. The award for the three most valuable fine fleeces (under 16.5 microns) went to Mr and Mrs Lawrie Bryant of Wycroft Cashmeres, Masterton, with three fleeces having a total value of $86.86.
