To Canada for conference
Raana " Biddy" Mareikura has been asked by the Kaumatua of the Waimarino to go to a world conference on indigenous people's education in Vancouver, Canada. She leaves for the conference this Saturday along with 47 other people from around New Zealand. The whanau from Maungarongo marae have been raising money for her trip, which will cost at least $2240. The conference will be a five day programme looking at traditional education, including Kohanga Reo, the Maori language nests. Film screenings are planned showing the people attending the conference and their countries. Delegates from seventeen nations are expected to take part in the programme which will be held partly at the University of British Columbia and partly at the Squamish Nation Reservation. The Squamish are North American Indians. An opening ceremony will be performed by Grand Chief George Manuel, founder of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. This ceremony will include the "passing of the talking stick". The New Zealand delegation will be asked to wear traditional dress on three occasions during the conference, including the closing ceremony which will include an exchange of gifts.
