Neighbourhood watch scheme for Raetihi
A meeting instigated by the Waimarino Lion's Club to form a neighbourhood watch group in Raetihi was held earlier this year to guage public interest. A second public meeting was suggested by Deputy Mayor John Compton during the recent monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council, as there had been apparently little action from the initial gathering.
"Collective responsibility is what we are looking for, for our properties and our homes," he said. Mr Compton said recent "nefarious activity" around Raetihi had prompted him to make some enquiries as to whether a neighbourhood watch scheme would work. Mr Compton said the retail area of town had been hit consistently for the last three months and he suggested that the council make the project their concern by holding another meeting.
