Ohakune rates struck
The Ohakune Borough Council set the 1987-88 rates at last week's full council meeting. Confirmation of the setting of the rates struck will take place at the next meeting on 18 June. The rate requirement for the year for Ohakune is up approximately 14.9% on last year. This increase includes the 5% GST content which was not part of last year's rates. Individual property rate increases will vary greatly this year due to a large proportion of the rate take being in the form of uniform charges. From examples given at the Council meeting, rate
demands will increase by between 3.1% and 23.93%. A property valudd at $8,400 (land Value) that is subject to all the uniform charges will pay $511.39, an increase of 23.93%. This property could be a typical ski chalet. A typical residential property, valued at $18,500 will pay about $812, an increase of about 19%. An example given at the council meeting of a property with a land value of $70,00 will pay 10.9% more for this year, with the amount being $2347.49 Rates on properties are worked out individually with the various uniform charges added first, then the consolidated rate calculated on the property value. The uniform charges are $140 per rateable property for the general rate, $46 for water, $65 for refuse collection and disposal and $10 for sewerage. The consolidated rate is 2.9807 cents in the dollar of the rateable property value. This includes 0.2161 cents in the dollar that the council must collect for the catchment board.
