Tongariro National Park celebrations planned
A full schedule of events is planned for Tongariro National Park's centennial week in September. A race committee and social committee were formed to work on the race schedule from 19-27 September and following social activities. Saturday 19 SeptemberDual Slalom at Whakapapa organised by Whakapapa Alpine Committee. Sunday 20 September-Pinnacles Race at Tukino and Whakapapa, organised by T ukino Mountain Clubs .
Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September-North Island Secondary School Championships at Turoa, organised by Ruapehu College. From 21 to 27 September-World speed skiing championships at Turoa, organised by speed skier Henry van Asch. On 21 and 22 SeptemberCrater Lake walk, with RAL and Turoa ski patrols, from Turoa and Whakapapa. Wednesday 23 September is set aside for formal centennial celebrations to take place at the Chateau.
24 and 25 SeptemberRAL Peoples' Race and Disabled Skiers Race at Whakapapa with Whakapapa Alpine Committee. 26 and 27 September-Te Heuheu Trophy Race, with Whakapapa Alpine Committee, at Whakapapa. In some cases, two days are allocated to an event to allow for bad weather. Ideas for social activities for the celebrations include a Fashion Show at the Top O' the Bruce, an historical day on the skifield and a ball at the Chateau.
