Triple the space in new Waiouru gym

Work on Waiouru army camp's new gymnasium is progressing well and it looks set to be completed by midNovember. The new gym which is being constructed adjacent to Burns Pool will replace the old gymnasium which was once the camp theatre. The existing gymnasium was built during World War One and converted into a gym about 1948. It becjame apparent recently that the building was fast becoming inadequate to meet the current demands placed on it by sports clubs and individuals. The gym's facilities are used by nearly all of the population of Army Training Group, roughly numbering 1200. The building houses a three quarter length basketball court and one shower. There are no

changing facilities or heating, very poor lighting and limited storage. The existing gymnasium's roof is also too low to play Badminton. While it is inadequate in many ways, it is utilised by many after hours clubs, including badminton, volleyball, basketball, wei-

ght-training, rugby, soccer, hockey, gymnastics, jazzergetics and jazzercise, in addition to individuals making use of the facilities. Physical fitness classes for the soldiers are run 8-9 times a day in the building, with numbers anywhere between 8 and 110 per class.

Construction on the new gymnasium began in June 1986, with an estimated cost of $1.8 million. It is expected to be completed by the end of November this year though the construction timetable is subject to weather conditions. Construction is now at the point of fitting internal lining and exterior walls, with a crew of nine carpenters at work. The new gymnasium is 1200 square metres and Will accommodate two basketball courts, four volleyball, or three badminton courts. Other facilities include an in -built sound system, weight training room, shower and changing facilities, offices and storage room and upstairs seating. The complex will eventually also be linked to the indoor pool. The gymnasium also features a sprung floor which uses light rubber pads under the surface material to give the floor extra flexibility. The gymnasium will be essentially for army use and occasional army related sporting events.
