National Park work on target
Work on National Park township's new sewerage system is well under way and has progressed steadily despite unfavourable weather. A crew of four from Asphaltic Construction, New Plymouth have been working on the project since the end of last year and have recently completed work along Carroll Street which took about four months. Working ten and a half hours a day on average, the crew, consisting of two diggger drivers, a loader driver and a pipe layer, have installed about 4km of pipe, sometirnes having to dig up to 5.5 metres deep through the rise of a hill, to ensure the pipe is layed straight. A laser beam is used to make sure the pipe is layed level, thus ensuring an even grade. One problem has been digging through the layer of volcanic rock that lies between one and 100 metres ben-eath the roadway. Blasting the rock is the only means of penetrating the layer.
Loader-driver Steve Weekly estimated the job will be completed within the next couple of months, depending on weather con-
ditions. A local contractor, Lawrence Taituma of National Park, has been working with the gang.
