Peace runners in Waiouru

Twelve of the 20,000 people taking part in a world-wide running relay for peace passed through Waiouru last Wednesday on their way to Wellington. They take it in turns to carry a flaming torch on the run from Auckland to Wellington, taking about five daysThe relay is part of a run covering 27,000 miles (43,450kms), six continents

and 55 countries and is described as the longest running event in history. Called the 4Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run', the relay will take 103 days to complete. It is dedicated to world peace and oneness amongst peoples and nations. Sri Chinmoy is described as an author, peace advocate and director of peace meditations at the United Nations in New York.
