Blast off for college 'Starblaze'
Ruapehu CoIIege's contemporary rock musical, 'Starblaze', involving a cast of 50 pupils, a comprehensive orchestra and large numbers of back-up crew, blasted off last week in a blaze of music and colour. 'Starblaze' was the school's second full scale production in recent years, the first being 'Maui' in 1985. The two-hour fantasy production involved many weeks of planning, propmaking and rehearsals, with much effort by staff and parents in making space-age costumes. Director, teacher Sue Allomes, said 'Starblaze' was chosen for this year's performance as it was written by New Zealanders for New Zealand children, with original music and lyrics composed especially for the production. Much work went into ereating the realistic back Irops. Special mention was , ° givcn to the staff and parents behind the scenes. who arranged make-up and costumes. The cast performed for senior citizens last Sunday and for local primary schools on Monday. The production's first public performance was on Tuesday night in the college hall. Further performances were on Wednesday and Thursday nights with equally good crowds. Principal Ian Meredith opened the production with thanks to the many people who contributed their time and talent to helping and commented on the level of ability of the aspiring actors and actresses. "There is an amazing pool of talent at Ruapehu College, Schools must provide many avenues for the talents of students to blossom. Students must experience success 'Starblaze' is such an avenue for success, and the blooming of talent," he said.
