Sunday trains possible
The Silver Fern may be run on more Sundays once the electrification project is completed. Marketing manager for the Passenger Business Group, Alan Coombs says trial running of the Silver Fern during four Sundays in January proved very popular. "Two Sundays were fully booked in both directions while the other two were 70 percent full," he said. It is customary to operate the Silver Fern on Saturdays during school holidays but the Passenger Business Group believes a bigger untapped market might exist on Sundays.
Mr Coombs says while the financial results of the trials have still to be fully evaluated, it looks promising. "The Passenger Business Group hopes to run the Silver Fern again on Sundays during the next Christmas holiday period and when electrification is finished, it would like to operate the train on a more regular Sunday timetable," he said. Mr Coombes says it appears the Sunday train running did not affect numbers travelling by coach. "The Passenger Business Group will continue to investigate alternative train running," he said.
